Emotional Shadows

You don't have to experience the emptiness of death to appreciate the beauty of life, the crush of defeat to enjoy the delight in victory, nor the sting of heartbreak to understand love.  In fact, it seems the negative experiences rather than enhance the appreciation of the good experiences, tends to darken them.

If you’ve lost a child, can you hold your newborn in your arms without the pang of your previous loss?  If you’ve shared a thousand sunsets with your sweetheart, will it ever look the same again? And in that moment, when you suddenly realize their memory has faded, that you've moved on, does it bring you to your knees?

If you pass a test the second time around, are you still haunted by the mistakes you made the first time? Can you console yourself with your best effort? Was it really good enough to participate? Can you move forward? Or are you crippled by the what-ifs?

As you embrace new love, are you plagued with the doubts instilled from your past? Are you forever questioning your worth? Do you hide who you really are? Afraid of rejection? Of losing yourself? Can you give yourself wholly? Do you keep a piece of your heart reserved? Just in case?

Pain, regret, anguish, misery…the results of our human frailty? Can you enjoy the moments without wondering what could have been?
